“It’s a testament to his exemplary service and the positive impact he has made on the lives of Veterans,” said Dr. Lucy Vaughn, SAVAHCS Chief of Mental Health Services.

Several staff members nominated Hickox, but it was the nomination from Fisher House Manager Mike Ramsey that impressed the Selection Committee. This recognition honors Hickox’s individual achievements and highlights the vital work at SAVAHCS supporting veterans’ mental health and overall well-being. The nomination for the national award places Hickox among the top-performing PSSs nationwide.

“If I am chosen as the VHA Peer of the Year, it would be the pinnacle of my career as a VA peer specialist,” Hickox said. “And a great beginning to the next chapter of my life working with Veterans.”

While the SAVAHCS community celebrates this achievement, they remain hopeful that Hickox will win the national title. Regardless, his recognition for dedication and service has already significantly impacted countless veterans’ lives in Southern Arizona and beyond.
