The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has greenlit a $143 million project to develop a 96-bed mental health treatment facility at Los Angeles General Medical Center. This facility represents the final phase in establishing a Restorative Care Village at the Boyle Heights campus.
The new Psychiatric Subacute Facility will feature six Mental Health Rehabilitation Center programs, each equipped with 16 beds. Housed in a 92,000-square-foot multi-story building, it will offer 24/7 psychiatric care and rehabilitation services for individuals with severe mental illnesses.
“These beds are essential in addressing our county’s behavioral health crisis,” Supervisor Hilda Solis stated. “The Restorative Care Village at Los Angeles General Medical Center will play a crucial role in tackling our county’s major challenges. It will restore dignity to our communities and offer hope to our most vulnerable residents.”
The facility is set to be completed by 2026. Funding sources include the American Rescue Plan Act, the state’s Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program, the county Department of Mental Health, and the county’s Care First Community Investment Funds.
Previous phases of the campus development have already been completed. These include a Recuperative Care Center with 96 medical respite care beds and four Crisis Residential Treatment Programs providing 64 acute mental health beds in total.
Additionally, a Mental Health Urgent Care Center and a Residential Withdrawal Management Facility are currently under construction. The Residential Withdrawal Management Facility will offer 32 beds for individuals with substance abuse issues.
Solis’ office highlights that the overall Restorative Care Village will be a pioneering campus dedicated to addressing the comprehensive physical, behavioral, and substance use needs of the county’s most vulnerable residents.
“The Psychiatric Subacute Facility marks a significant step in integrating services to meet our community’s needs,” said Jorge Orozco, CEO of Los Angeles General Medical Center. “Combining mental health and social services with a world-class medical center will enhance the vision of health and wellness for our community.”
