Rising Concern Over Mental Health Among Thais

by Kaia

The Department of Mental Health in Thailand is intensifying efforts to address a concerning rise in mental health issues, particularly amidst a backdrop of increasing depression and suicide rates. According to recent reports, the number of psychiatric patients receiving treatment has climbed from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023. However, officials caution that many more individuals may still lack access to necessary care.

Between October 2022 and April 2023, the department observed a notable increase in individuals at risk of mental health issues: 15.48% at risk of stress, 17.20% at risk of depression, and 10.63% at risk of suicide. Highlighting the broader impact, Director-General Pongkasem Khaimook emphasized that mental health concerns not only affect individuals but also have economic implications, citing data from the World Health Organization indicating substantial global productivity losses due to depression and anxiety.

The shortage of psychiatrists is a critical concern, with only 822 psychiatrists available in Thailand, equating to just 1.25 psychiatrists per 100,000 people. To address this shortfall, the government has approved plans to bolster the mental health workforce by 2027, aiming to add 150 psychiatrists, 1,500 nurses, 400 clinical psychologists, 250 specialized occupational therapists, and 150 specialized pharmacists. Collaboration with professional bodies such as the Royal College of Psychiatrists of Thailand and the Psychiatric Association of Thailand aims to produce 400 additional psychiatrists within five years, potentially raising the psychiatrist-to-population ratio to 1.7 per 100,000.

In addition to workforce expansion, the department is implementing strategies to enhance mental health and combat drug addiction, including advanced healthcare training for staff and fostering partnerships with various stakeholders to ensure comprehensive access to treatment. Director-General Pongkasem emphasized the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors as well as local communities to foster a mentally healthy society and improve the effectiveness of mental health services.
