Dr. Omar emphasizes that phrases like “man up” contribute to the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. This stigma makes it difficult for men to express their emotions and seek help.
“It creates the perception that if you’re dealing with emotional struggles, you’re somehow weak or not really depressed; you just need to toughen up,” Dr. Omar explains. “These messages can lead men to believe they shouldn’t open up about their problems for fear of negative reactions.”
