Football Sessions Promote Mental Health Awareness in Cornwall

by Kaia

Plymouth Argyle’s community initiative, the Talk & Tackle Programme, is offering a new opportunity for men in Cornwall to discuss mental health in a supportive, football-focused environment. The program, organized by the Argyle Community Trust, aims to support individuals facing mental health challenges by providing a space for open dialogue and physical activity.

Held at Launceston College Sports Hall on Mondays and Cornwall College Cambourne on Tuesdays, the sessions are open to anyone struggling with mental health issues. Wayne Berry, the West Cornwall Football Programmes Lead, emphasized the importance of creating a sense of community and trust through these gatherings.

“It’s tough for many men, myself included, to talk about emotions and mental health,” said Berry. “But football is a powerful tool to bring people together and help them through these conversations, ultimately improving both their mental and physical well-being.”

The programme, which collaborates with the men’s mental health charity Man Down, fosters conversations led by Argyle Community Coaches. Participants then transition from discussion to physical activity with a friendly football match.

Berry described the sessions as a “football-based men’s mental health programme for individuals aged 18 and over,” with a goal of dismantling the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. The programme welcomes participants through self-referral or recommendations from family, friends, or organizations.

By using football as a catalyst for discussion and connection, the Talk & Tackle Programme aims to break barriers and encourage more men to seek support for their mental health.
