British musician Toby Jepson has unveiled a new animated video for “Alone With You,” the lead track from his upcoming Look Out! mini-album trilogy. The song is the first of 20 new releases from the former Little Angels frontman, who is now performing under his solo project, Toby and the Whole Truth.
A high-energy rock anthem, “Alone With You” explores the deeply personal struggles related to men’s mental health. The song’s raw themes are brought to life through a striking psychedelic animated video that captures the turbulence of navigating the complexities of mental health in the modern, often overwhelming, digital world.
In an effort to create a unique visual narrative for his Look Out! project, Jepson worked with animator Euan Friel, a recent university graduate with a distinctive style that blends simplicity with emotion. Friel had previously collaborated with Jepson’s band, Wayward Sons, and his innovative work left a lasting impression.
“I didn’t want to appear in the videos in a conventional way,” Jepson explained. “However, I realized the importance of showing that the songs are very personal to me, so my image needed to be involved, albeit in an abstract form.” Jepson’s idea was to animate himself as a line drawing based on home-recorded footage of him performing the song.
“Animation has a subtle power,” he continued. “It’s a two-dimensional medium that draws people in with its seeming innocence. There’s no immediate sense of threat, which makes it ideal for portraying emotional depth and complex subjects like mental health.”
The video takes viewers on a symbolic journey through Jepson’s mind, visualizing the confusion and trauma that mental health struggles can provoke. It presents a kaleidoscopic exploration of color, texture, and distortion, representing the complexities of human imagination and the emotional weight carried by past experiences. “The imagery in the video reflects how trauma can become embedded in our lives, often feeling normalized or even familiar,” Jepson said. “It’s a visual representation of how emotional turmoil can shape our perceptions of the world.”
Jepson’s new music, through its bold animation and personal exploration of mental health, is set to offer a raw, honest look at the emotional struggles faced by many men today.
