Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of Vice President Kamala Harris, has dismissed rumors claiming she was admitted to a mental institution following the Vice President’s loss in the elections on Tuesday. In a statement shared via Instagram on Saturday, Emhoff called the claims “false,” asserting that they were “not true.”
Emhoff, the daughter of Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, was seen crying during Harris’ concession speech at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The emotional moment quickly went viral, prompting some to suggest that she had suffered a mental breakdown and was hospitalized.
In her Instagram story, Emhoff responded directly to the speculation: “There’s a rumor about me having a mental breakdown and getting checked into a hospital. Not true.” She also expressed frustration with those spreading the false claims, adding, “Also f*** you if you’re out there spreading that.” Emhoff emphasized that showing emotion, such as crying, should not be stigmatized. “Anyone who says there [is] probably needs a good cry,” she remarked.
The fashion designer and model also reflected on her personal experiences, saying, “I’ve struggled with my mental health my whole life and I’m not ashamed of it.” She added that she had been spending time with her dog, Jerry, as a way to cope.
Following the viral photo of Emhoff and her father on the Howard University campus, several social media posts began circulating, further fueling the rumors. One post read: “Rumors are that #EllaEmhoff, #Kamala’s stepdaughter who openly supported Hamas, has been institutionalized as a nutcase after Kamala’s loss.” Another commented: “Ella Emhoff has reportedly lost her mind.”
Emhoff, who made a name for herself as a fashion designer and model in New York, first gained widespread attention for her distinctive style at the inauguration of President Joe Biden in 2021. A graduate of Parsons School of Design, she has since worked with high-profile designers in the fashion industry.
