Mainers gathered at Capitol Park on Saturday for the annual NAMI-Maine Walk, an event focused on raising awareness about mental health issues.
Participants walked a one-mile loop and enjoyed food and activities like tie-dying and bubble blowing. The event created a lively atmosphere and encouraged open discussions about mental health.
“They’re able to have a space where they can spend time with each other in a fun, positive environment,” said Jill Henderson, the event organizer. “They feel safe knowing that the people around them care about mental health and access to care for all Mainers.”
Attendee Amelia Teta shared her thoughts, emphasizing the connections formed among participants. “You have no idea why people are here or who they’re here for. You just know we all have something in common that allows us to connect,” she said.
The Maine chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness organizes NAMI-Walks Maine every year to raise funds for mental health resources.
