Birmingham Police have identified the weapons involved in the recent mass shooting in Five Points South. However, they are not yet ready to share specific details about the firearms.
Currently, there are no updates on potential suspects. Despite this, tips are still coming in through Crime Stoppers.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald acknowledged the emotional toll on Birmingham police officers following the tragic events of Saturday night, which left multiple individuals killed and injured. He emphasized the department’s commitment to seeking justice for the victims and their families.
Fitzgerald mentioned that the Birmingham Police Department (BPD) provides mental health resources for officers. He stressed that it is acceptable for officers to not feel okay after witnessing such traumatic events. This year alone, many officers have dealt with multiple homicides, leading to overwhelming stress.
“We have a bad habit of compartmentalizing what we see,” Fitzgerald said. “If you don’t talk about your experiences, they eventually manifest in different ways.” He highlighted the availability of peer support and counseling resources within the department.
Fitzgerald urged officers to utilize these mental health services, noting that recent incidents have been challenging for everyone involved.
He also encouraged anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the police or Crime Stoppers.
