Surge in ‘Designer Vagina’ Procedures Reflects Changing Attitudes and Improved Mental Health

by Kaia

The trend towards cosmetic surgery has shifted from luxury accessories to personal enhancements, with an increasing number of women opting for labiaplasty, commonly known as “designer vagina” surgery. This procedure, which reshapes the vaginal labia, has seen a dramatic rise in popularity.

Between 2012 and 2017, labiaplasty surgeries in the United States surged by 217%, and the rate continued to climb, increasing by 20% from 2017 to 2021.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and founder of The V Suite, has noticed a “noticeable increase” in these surgeries since she began performing them in 1999. She explained that labiaplasty involves removing excess tissue from the labia minora, often using a scalpel or laser, to create a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Recent research published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal has found that labiaplasty is not only physically safe but can also significantly improve women’s mental health. Women typically seek this procedure to address functional issues, such as discomfort during sex caused by the size or shape of the labia, or for aesthetic reasons.

Levente Sára, an associate professor at Semmelweis University’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, highlighted that while the medical necessity of the surgery may not always be clear, the improvement in self-image and sexual life is well-documented. He noted that many women, particularly younger ones, choose the surgery based on their partner’s suggestions and recommended involving psychologists to ensure the decision is made for the right reasons.

Data analyzed by Semmelweis University from 3,600 labiaplasty patients revealed a 95% satisfaction rate and a low complication rate of 0.5%. This is notably lower compared to other cosmetic procedures such as eye color change surgery, which has a 92% complication rate, and Brazilian butt lifts, which carry a 38% risk.

Labiaplasty performed with a scalpel is associated with higher risks of complications like bleeding and swelling. In contrast, radiofrequency labiaplasty offers a shorter recovery time, minimal risk of complications, and high patient satisfaction. Despite these benefits, the difference in complication rates between scalpel and radiofrequency procedures is not statistically significant due to the more recent approval of radiofrequency techniques.

Dr. Rajagopal emphasized that self-consciousness about labial appearance often starts at a young age. She noted that if a woman desires a less prominent labial appearance to improve comfort during sex and intimacy, labiaplasty can be a suitable option. However, she reassures patients that there is a wide range of what is considered normal for labial appearance.

Overall, labiaplasty continues to gain popularity as it addresses both physical and psychological concerns, reflecting a broader acceptance of cosmetic enhancements and their impact on well-being.
