Cardio drumming has become increasingly popular. This exercise involves hitting an exercise ball in a bucket with drumsticks to music. It helps burn calories, relieve stress, strengthen bones, and build community.
The trend is gaining traction on TikTok. A recent video of women cardio drumming to Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” went viral, with 19.3 million views and nearly 30,000 comments. Some TikTok users were surprised to learn it was a workout.
Dr. Tommy Martin, a Boston-based physician, praised the viral video. He highlighted the sense of community and positive impact on self-esteem and motivation that cardio drumming provides.
Ashley Broadwater, a writer, noted how cardio drumming helped her release anger and frustration. In a class in Durham, North Carolina, she found the workout both challenging and enjoyable. “It’s fun to drum and swing your arms,” she wrote for Well+Good.
Cardio drumming started in 2001 when Carrie Ekins, who had suffered a hip injury, used drumsticks on cardboard boxes and exercise balls. This led to her “Drums Alive” program, which aims to boost mood and heart rate.
Participants are drawn to the workout for various reasons. A stay-at-home mom finds it beneficial for her mental health, while another woman lost over 20 pounds in 16 weeks through the routine.
At the Foundry Christian Community Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky, people of all ages, from 3 to 83, enjoy cardio drumming. Shawna Wood, the Foundry’s COO, told the Bowling Green Daily News that it helps improve blood pressure, manage weight, and strengthen the heart.
