The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System Creative Arts Festival and Competition offers Veterans a unique opportunity to heal through Ceramic Art Therapy.
Art therapy has become a vital tool for many Veterans dealing with trauma from their military service. Veterans often diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other mental health issues find solace in various forms of art. Painting, woodwork, photography, and drawing allow Veterans to express their emotions and temporarily relieve negative thoughts.
Traci Gilbertson, a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1986-1990, is one such individual. Initially an Airman performing aircraft maintenance at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, she later became an Aviation Electrician in Oak Harbor, Washington.
For Traci, art therapy has been instrumental in her healing journey. She shares her experience:
“Ceramic Art Therapy has been a huge lifesaver for me, helping heal years of pain caused by military trauma. This trauma led to PTSD and Military Sexual Trauma (MST). When overwhelmed by uncontrollable feelings, I start painting. I pour everything I feel into my art, and seeing the good in what I’ve created helps ease the bad thoughts and feelings, at least for a moment. I sometimes give away my pieces, but I also keep a collection to remind myself that I am stronger than I realize. I will make it through one day at a time.”
The Creative Arts Festival and Competition will take place at the Sioux Falls VA Auditorium on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Open to Veterans and employees, the event will showcase visual artwork, creative writing, and recorded drama, dance, and musical performances.
