Study Shows In-School Mental Health Programs Benefit Black and Hispanic Children

by Kaia

A recent study underscores the significant benefits of in-school mental health programs for Black and Hispanic children, particularly those who may not otherwise have access to such resources. The study, conducted by Erika’s Lighthouse, a national organization dedicated to reducing mental health stigma, reveals that school-based programs are crucial in addressing mental health challenges in these communities.

Addressing the Mental Health Crisis

Mental health challenges among youth are on the rise. According to a 2023 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 40% of students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, and a significant portion of students—nearly 20%—seriously considered suicide. Furthermore, nearly 10% of students attempted suicide, underscoring the urgency for effective mental health interventions.

Erika’s Lighthouse aims to bridge the gap by offering a free, comprehensive mental health education curriculum for students, families, and educators. This initiative is designed to help adolescents navigate conditions such as depression, reducing feelings of isolation and offering support before mental health issues worsen.

“All of our programming that Erika’s Lighthouse offers is completely free of charge,” said Brandon Combs, executive director of the organization. “We are currently in over 25,100 schools across the country, and we’re excited to continue growing.”

In-School Mental Health Programs: A Game Changer for Students of Color

The study, which involved surveys from over 18,000 students in grades 5 through 12, demonstrated the positive impact of mental health programs in predominantly Black and Hispanic schools. Conducted across 515 schools nationwide, including public, private, and charter institutions, the data revealed significant improvements in students’ comfort with discussing mental health issues.

Before participating in the program, only 50% of students felt comfortable talking to a trusted adult about their mental health. However, after engaging with the mental health resources, students in predominantly Black and Hispanic schools—who made up 9% and 11% of the participants, respectively—showed improved comfort and trust in their school environments.

Valencia Davis, a Licensed Psychotherapist and Mental Health Specialist, emphasized the vital role such programs play for students of color, noting the generational trauma that many Black and Brown students face. “Students of color, going back to when our parents and grandparents were coming up, didn’t have access to anything,” she said. “Trauma was passed on, generation after generation.”

The Importance of Schools in Mental Health Support

The CDC highlights the critical role schools play in supporting student mental health. Schools, when equipped with the right resources, can connect students with trusted adults, foster positive peer relationships, and provide access to mental health services. These efforts not only promote emotional well-being but also contribute to better academic outcomes, as students with strong mental health tend to perform better in school.

“Investing in student mental health leads to improved classroom behavior, stronger school engagement, and better peer relationships—all of which are connected to academic success,” the CDC reports.

As Erika’s Lighthouse continues to expand its efforts, the study underscores the importance of accessible mental health programs in fostering healthier, more supportive school environments—especially for Black and Hispanic children who often face additional barriers to care.

With an emphasis on trust, community, and support, in-school mental health programs like those offered by Erika’s Lighthouse are proving to be a vital tool in improving the mental well-being of children in underserved communities.
