Mary Lou Retton, a celebrated figure in women’s gymnastics, recently shared her thoughts on fellow gymnast Simone Biles, describing her as a “super freak” due to Biles’ record-breaking achievements.
In an interview with Women’s World this month, Retton also disclosed her recent battle with a severe health condition. She revealed that in 2023, she was “literally on her deathbed.”
Retton, who gained fame at age 16, admitted that she “didn’t recognize herself” last year. She has been diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia that severely affects her lungs and now depends on oxygen tanks for breathing.
Doctors are still uncertain about the cause of her lung issues, as Retton told Entertainment Tonight. She spent about a month in intensive care in October 2023 and is dealing with permanent lung damage.
“My lungs are pretty scarred up and they’re gonna stay that way forever,” Retton said.
This experience has had a significant impact on Retton’s mental state. “I’ve been struggling with that,” she admitted.
Despite these challenges, Retton strives to maintain a positive outlook. “I have a lot to look forward to, and I know that,” she said.
