Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Ihuoma Emenuga will no longer serve in her role, nor will she remain employed by Baltimore City, Mayor Brandon Scott announced Monday night.
This change comes just over six months after Emenuga began her tenure in January 2024. Her departure is effective immediately, according to a news release.
Simone Johnson, Deputy City Administrator, will step in as the interim Health Commissioner.
When Emenuga was hired in December 2023, Scott praised her as a key figure in improving the city’s public health. “Our public health infrastructure is vital, and I am excited to appoint Dr. Emenuga as our new Health Commissioner,” Scott said in a news release on December 14, 2023. “Her experience and innovative approach are crucial for advancing health in every neighborhood.”
Scott also announced that a nationwide search will be conducted to find the next Health Commissioner.
