Three doctors from Alfred Health are currently participating in the 2024 World Medical Football Championships. This marks the first time Australia has fielded a women’s team, the Medtildas, in this global soccer event.
The tournament, which brings together teams of medical professionals from around the world, is being hosted by Australia for the first time this year.
Dr. Jessica Au, a general surgery registrar and one of the three Alfred Health employees representing the Medtildas, highlighted the unique opportunity to connect with healthcare workers at various stages of their careers.
“It’s fascinating to have such a diverse group,” Dr. Au said. “We have participants who are just starting their medical careers and others who are well into theirs. It’s great to be in a relaxed environment with colleagues from the hospital, having fun and playing soccer.”
The Medtildas Green side has had a strong start, losing only one game. Dr. Au has already scored six goals, while Alfred Critical Care Resident Dr. Laura Sofoulis has added three more.
“The team spirit has been fantastic, and everyone is excited for the upcoming games and finals,” Dr. Au said. “Winning the tournament as the host nation would be an incredible feeling, making us the first champions. But we’re staying focused on one game at a time.”
Good luck to Dr. Au and all the Medtildas!
