As the excitement for the Olympic Games builds, many are motivated to improve their fitness. To help you get started, Local 4 has teamed up with a Metro Detroit athletic trainer to create a set of exercises inspired by the Paris Olympics.
Olympians train for their specific sports but also focus on overall fitness. Their dedication can inspire us all to get moving.
Jenny Burnham, an athletic trainer and sports performance specialist at Henry Ford Health, has designed a workout based on Olympic activities. These exercises are suitable for beginners and can be adjusted based on your fitness level.
Here’s a quick guide to her Olympic-inspired workout:
1. Medicine Ball V Up – Inspired by Diving
If you don’t have a medicine ball, use a book or a pillow for an easier option.
2. Mountain Climbers in a Tall Plank Position – Inspired by Track
Focus on good form and go slow if you are new to exercising.
3. Plank Variation – Inspired by Breaking
4. Standing Reverse Fly – Inspired by Swimming
If you don’t have dumbbells, use cans of food or bottles of water as weights.
5. Squat to an Overhead Press – Inspired by Basketball & Volleyball
6. Lateral Bound – Inspired by Hockey & Tennis
Before starting any new exercise routine, consult with your healthcare provider. Stop exercising if you experience pain or shortness of breath. Modify exercises if you have any injuries or chronic conditions.
