Myanmar’s nominal president, Myint Swe, is suffering from serious health issues, according to state media on Friday. This rare disclosure comes just weeks before the current state of emergency is set to expire.
Myint Swe, 73, a former army officer, served as vice president under Myanmar’s quasi-civilian system before becoming head of state during the 2021 coup. He immediately transferred power to the military.
The state-run Global New Light of Myanmar reported that Myint Swe is suffering from “psychomotor retardation and malnutrition.” Medical examinations have revealed neurological disorders and peripheral neuropathy disease, and he has also undergone eye surgery.
Though Myint Swe is primarily a figurehead, his health condition could create constitutional challenges for the junta. The military has relied on him to sign off on decrees, providing a semblance of legitimacy to its rule.
The military government is currently facing significant challenges, including an armed resistance gaining ground in many parts of the country and a deteriorating economy. This situation is increasing pressure on junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, the mastermind behind the coup.
Unable to quell the pro-democracy rebellion that has severely tested its governance, the junta has repeatedly extended the state of emergency, which is due to expire on July 31. Each extension has come with promises of future elections.
Myint Swe assumed the presidency after the incumbent, Win Myint, was arrested during the coup alongside Nobel laureate and de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Both have been detained since.
Richard Horsey, a Myanmar analyst at Crisis Group, noted that without any known vice presidents, there is no clear succession plan if Myint Swe were to step down. “It effectively means Min Aung Hlaing would decide, but he couldn’t appoint himself as president,” Horsey said. “This may be related to the renewed discussions about elections.”
State media reported on Friday that Myint Swe’s condition has not improved despite various medical treatments, including those in Singapore. “As he cannot perform normal daily activities, including eating, he is receiving close medical care,” the report stated.
