The Department of Veterans Affairs is moving users of online services to Login.gov or ID.me for accessing benefits and health care accounts. This change is expected to affect 3 million veterans and beneficiaries.
In a press release, the VA announced that starting January 2025, users of My HealtheVet won’t be able to use usernames or passwords. Those who haven’t switched can regain access by creating a new account, a process the VA estimates will take about 10 minutes.
This transition is part of the VA’s efforts to implement executive orders aimed at enhancing national cybersecurity and improving federal customer service. Kurt DelBene, the VA’s assistant secretary for IT and chief information officer, emphasized that Login.gov and ID.me will improve security and streamline access for veterans.
DelBene stated, “The transition is all about putting the veteran first, by simplifying access and providing tailored support.” The move to these platforms also supports the Biden administration’s initiatives to safeguard veteran and beneficiary data.
Login.gov, managed by the General Services Administration, is testing biometric verification technology to enhance security. Meanwhile, ID.me, a credential service used by multiple federal agencies and other organizations, has faced scrutiny for its processing times from lawmakers in the past.
