The first comprehensive study on metal concentrations in tampons has revealed troubling levels of lead, arsenic, and cadmium in several brands. The findings, conducted by researchers from UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and Michigan State University, highlight the potential health risks associated with these toxic metals. The study, which ran from September 2022 to March 2023, analyzed 30 different tampon products purchased from stores across the US, UK, and EU, as well as major online retailers.
Lead, cadmium, and arsenic were found at elevated concentrations, with lead detected in every tested tampon—a particularly concerning discovery due to its known health hazards even in small amounts. The presence of arsenic and cadmium also raises alarms, as these metals are linked to serious health conditions including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and kidney damage.
Researchers emphasized that while exposure to low levels of these metals is common in daily life, the direct contact with tampons may pose additional risks, especially given the potential for vaginal absorption. Lead, in particular, can accumulate in the body over time, affecting various organs and systems.
The study revealed variations in metal concentrations based on tampon characteristics such as organic versus non-organic materials and region of purchase. Non-organic tampons showed higher lead concentrations, while arsenic levels were elevated in organic varieties. The presence of these metals could stem from contamination during raw material production or manufacturing processes, including water contamination or intentional introduction for functional purposes like antimicrobial properties.
Moving forward, the researchers advocate for mandatory testing of tampons for metal content and improved labeling to inform consumers about potential risks. They stress the need for further studies to assess how much of these metals can leach into the body and impact health.
