A health expert has issued a strong warning about the color of urine, suggesting that certain shades could indicate serious health issues. Dr. Janine Bowring, speaking on TikTok, highlighted that urine that is too clear, resembling water, might indicate over-hydration. On the other hand, urine that is dark, resembling maple syrup, could be a sign of dehydration, necessitating increased fluid intake. She emphasized the importance of staying properly hydrated and maintaining kidney health, especially as people age.
Typically, normal urine is pale yellow, but its color can change due to factors like health conditions, diet, and medications. For instance, eating blackberries can turn urine pink, while certain medications like amitriptyline can cause it to appear green.
Dr. Lawrence Cunningham, a GP at the UK Care Guide, further elaborated that red or pink urine could indicate blood presence, potentially signaling issues like urinary tract infections, kidney stones, or bladder cancer. Brown or cola-colored urine, he noted, might suggest liver disease or severe dehydration. Urine color varies based on hydration levels, diet, medications, and underlying health conditions.
In addition to unusual colors, unhealthy urine may contain black specks, which Dr. Cunningham explained could stem from various internal factors requiring medical attention.
“It’s crucial to seek guidance from a GP if you notice black specks in your urine,” Dr. Cunningham emphasized, highlighting the importance of addressing potential health concerns promptly.
