The ongoing cancer treatment of Kate Middleton has posed significant challenges for Prince William in assisting King Charles III with his royal duties. Following the disclosure of Middleton’s diagnosis, the Princess of Wales has chosen to stay out of the public eye.
Prince William has also refrained from attending public events and gatherings to remain by his wife’s side during this difficult period. As a result, he will likely be unable to replace King Charles III at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM).
About CHOGM
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings (CHOGM) are biennial gatherings of leaders from Commonwealth countries, hosted by different member nations on a rotating basis. Traditionally, the Monarch or their delegate represents the Crown at these meetings.
Queen Elizabeth II maintained this tradition for nearly four decades. Starting in 2011, due to her health, she began delegating this role to then-Prince Charles, who is now King Charles III.
This Year’s CHOGM
This year’s CHOGM is scheduled for October 24, 2024, in Samoa, Oceania. Given the extensive travel required to attend, King Charles has been advised to avoid the meeting due to his ongoing cancer treatment.
Why Prince William May Not Attend CHOGM
No official confirmation has been made regarding King Charles’s attendance at CHOGM. However, it is unlikely that he will participate. Reports suggest that Prince William is also hesitant to step in, citing Kate Middleton’s health as the primary reason. According to an Express UK report, even though other working royals, including Princess Anne, are trying to fill in, they are not considered high-profile enough to represent the sovereign as the leader of the Commonwealth.
