The Wisconsin-based company issued a voluntary recall on June 17. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Snapchill’s current coffee-making process could lead to the growth of botulinum toxin in low-acid canned food.
Low-acid canned foods are especially prone to contamination by botulinum toxin. The FDA noted that Snapchill did not file its low-acid canned foods process with the agency, as required by regulations.
“No illnesses have been reported, and Snapchill is not aware of any instances where its products contained this pathogen,” Snapchill stated to Health. “Nevertheless, Snapchill is conducting this recall voluntarily with the FDA. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are our highest priorities. We are working quickly to resolve this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience or concern this recall may cause.”
The canned coffees were distributed nationwide through various coffee roasters and retailers and were also available on Snapchill’s website. The recalled products are sold under different roaster and brand names, not just under the Snapchill label. They come in metal cans ranging from 7 to 12 ounces.
The affected cans have the text “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” under the nutrition facts label, and some also say “Snapchill Coffee.” Over 200 products and brands are affected, detailed on the FDA’s website. These include Bolt Coffee, Euphoria Coffee, and Madcap Coffee, among others.
