A new nicotine product, small oral pouches, is rapidly gaining popularity, leading to a nationwide shortage.

Smokeless nicotine products like Zyn have become highly popular for several reasons. These products are tobacco-free and lack many chemicals typically found in cigarettes or chewing tobacco. Users report experiencing a mild buzz and an energy boost. But could they be too good to be true?

Zyn is a well-known brand offering nicotine pouches. Each tin contains 15 to 20 pouches, with nicotine content ranging from 1.5 mg to 9 mg. The younger generation is particularly fond of these products.

Henry Wiley and Jack Shears have been using Zyn pouches since turning 21, the legal age to purchase them.

“It’s relaxing and pleasant. You don’t smell like cigarettes,” said Shears. “Whether golfing or working, it’s very discreet. I enjoy it so much that I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.”

“I love Zyns; they’re amazing,” added Wiley.

Users have even developed their own jargon, referring to the products as “Zyn-babwe,” “Zynaccinos,” and “upper deckies.”

Brands like Zyn, Rogue, and Velo market their nicotine pouches as a safer alternative to tobacco, offering a similar buzz without the harmful effects.

“It’s not chewing tobacco; it’s not as gross. It’s definitely cleaner,” said Shears.

However, doctors caution that tobacco-free does not mean risk-free.

“There aren’t many studies on Zyn, so it’s hard to determine its long-term effects,” said Wiley.

Dr. Alexandria Howell, an oral medicine specialist and assistant professor at VCU’s School of Dentistry, explains how these pouches are used.

“Users place the pouch between their lips or cheek and gums, absorbing nicotine into the bloodstream through the mucosal membranes or gum tissues,” Dr. Howell said.

This method can lead to various health issues.

“There are some oral side effects reported by users, including gum soreness, mouth sores, and potential future gum recession,” Dr. Howell noted.

Additionally, the cardiovascular impact of nicotine consumption remains a concern.

“The medical and dental communities are calling for more comprehensive research to fully understand the long-term effects of these products,” Dr. Howell said. “This includes both the cardiovascular and oral health potential side effects.”

The discreet, smokeless nature of these products makes them particularly appealing to younger individuals.

According to the CDC, about 1.5% of middle and high school students reported using nicotine pouches in a 2023 survey.
