Berlin, October 7, 2023 – The World Health Summit (WHS) commenced its 75th-anniversary edition in Berlin, where concerns over the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel took center stage. The city illuminated the iconic Brandenburg Gate in honor of the World Health Organization, which co-hosted the event.
The spotlight on the health and humanitarian crisis triggered by Hamas attacks on Israeli towns and villages in the preceding week led to strong remarks from German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach. Minister Lauterbach condemned the “barbaric” actions of Hamas, which unfolded on October 7 and resulted in the tragic loss of over 1,200 lives, including men, women, and children. Additionally, more than 150 individuals were kidnapped during the events.
Lauterbach expressed profound dismay and concern about the current state of the world, highlighting the inhumane brutality that unfolded during the early morning incursion by armed gunmen into approximately 22 Israeli towns and villages. He described these acts as “deeply shocking” and entirely contrary to the principles upheld at the World Health Summit, which centers around the defense of human rights.
“Let me use this opportunity to condemn this barbaric attack,” Minister Lauterbach asserted, emphasizing the stark contrast between such acts of violence and the core values celebrated at this significant gathering.
The World Health Summit, despite the grim backdrop of the ongoing conflict, continues its mission to address global health challenges and promote a collective commitment to human well-being. The situation in the Middle East underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions and international cooperation in the realm of healthcare and humanitarian aid.
