September 27, 2023 – In a collaborative effort aimed at safeguarding the well-being of patients and healthcare workers, healthcare facilities across the region have voluntarily come together to adopt interim guidelines for universal masking as the approaching respiratory virus season poses heightened concerns.
Under these newly established guidelines, healthcare facilities have agreed to implement masking measures when specific thresholds indicative of escalated regional respiratory illness activity and impact are met. Once these thresholds are crossed, both staff and patients within patient care areas will be mandated to wear masks, in adherence to the agreement among participating healthcare organizations.
Public Health – Seattle & King County has joined forces with other local health jurisdictions in wholeheartedly endorsing this data-informed decision made by healthcare organizations. Their collective commitment underscores the significance of requiring masks in healthcare settings when heightened respiratory illness activity is detected.
The adoption of masking protocols within healthcare facilities is a proven and effective measure to curtail the transmission of respiratory illnesses. These guidelines, designed to enhance safety within healthcare settings, will provide crucial protection, particularly for individuals at higher risk, including older adults, individuals with chronic diseases, those with compromised immune systems, pregnant individuals, infants, and those who encounter disparities in healthcare access.
The collaborative effort among regional healthcare organizations reflects a proactive stance in preparing for the respiratory virus season and underscores the commitment to providing safe and equitable healthcare for all individuals within the community.
