FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) is celebrating World Contraception Day 2023 by revealing the winners of the Contraception Reimagined Challenge. This initiative, spearheaded by FIGO’s Committee on Contraception, sought to engage the creative minds within FIGO’s membership societies in redefining the language commonly used in discussions about contraception.
The selection committee, following thorough evaluation of all the submissions received, is pleased to unveil the winning entries:
Planception: The prevailing term “family planning” often carries a stigma, particularly affecting teenagers seeking contraception and individuals using contraceptives for reasons beyond traditional family planning. This stigma has been linked to an increase in teenage pregnancies and persisting unsafe abortion practices. Furthermore, it poses challenges for unmarried or divorced women. “Planception” offers a fresh perspective by encompassing the traditional role of contraception in family planning while embracing individuals of diverse social statuses and age groups. This innovative name is designed to facilitate discussions around safe abortion care, counseling, and the various reasons for initiating any contraception method.
These innovative names represent a significant step towards promoting more inclusive, stigma-free conversations about contraception. They acknowledge the diverse needs and circumstances of individuals seeking reproductive health services and aim to empower them to make informed choices. The Contraception Reimagined Challenge reflects FIGO’s commitment to advancing reproductive health and fostering meaningful dialogue on this crucial topic.
