Kazakhstan Drives Healthy Aging with Centers that Bring Purpose, Connection

by Kaia

Kazakhstan has launched a nationwide network of Active Longevity Centers to support healthy aging by offering free cultural, physical, creative, and educational activities for retirees. These centers aim to enhance seniors’ physical and mental well-being, build community ties, and encourage active lifestyles.

As Kazakhstan’s aging index rises—now 31.1 elderly people per 100 children—the government is responding with programs like yoga, aikune therapy, Nordic walking, IT literacy, language lessons, and arts and crafts. Six centers in Astana alone provide over 40 services and host more than 15,000 participants, with a special focus on balancing physical, creative, and cognitive activities.

The centers also offer consultations with health experts and legal advisors. Each participant undergoes a health checkup to tailor activities to their needs and is encouraged to mix different types of classes to keep both body and mind sharp.

Creativity and Community

One highlight is the handicraft group “Gifts Made by Hand” led by Alfiya Chernyatevich, where seniors create meaningful gifts while building fine motor skills, memory, and emotional resilience. Chernyatevich emphasizes community spirit and emotional support, describing her group as a close-knit family.

Life-Changing Impact

Seniors like 67-year-old Kabira Maimedova credit the centers with transforming their lives. After personal loss and health struggles, Maimedova regained hand mobility through crafts and built new friendships through Nordic walking groups. She praises the centers for giving older adults purpose, belonging, and joy.

These centers show how promoting social engagement, creativity, and physical activity can empower seniors to live healthier, more connected lives.
