Experts Recommend Healthy Drink Choices for Kids: Water, Milk, and Limited Juice

A group of health experts is urging parents to prioritize the quality of their children’s beverages as much as their food choices. The panel, which includes specialists from nutrition, pediatrics, pediatric dentistry, and the American Heart Association, suggests that the best drinks for children are tap water, plain pasteurized cow’s milk, and, in moderation, 100% fruit or vegetable juice.

According to the experts, children ages 5 to 18 should focus on these beverages while limiting others, such as plant-based milks, flavored milk, caffeinated drinks, and sugary beverages.

Water, they emphasize, is the top choice for hydration. Children should consume between 16 and 88 ounces of water per day, depending on their age and gender. Tap water is ideal, unless it is unsafe in a particular area.

Unflavored, fat-free, or low-fat pasteurized cow’s milk is also recommended due to its nutritional benefits. While 100% fruit or vegetable juices are acceptable, the panel advises limiting these drinks, as they can contribute unnecessary calories.

Plant-based milks are an option for children who need them due to dietary restrictions, but these alternatives do not offer the same nutritional value as cow’s milk.

Sugary drinks are strongly discouraged, as they contribute to cavities and excess calories. Caffeine-laden energy drinks are also a poor choice, as they can negatively affect a child’s cardiovascular health, sleep, and mental well-being.

The experts also note that modeling healthy drink choices at home can encourage children to adopt these habits. So, parents, grab your water bottle and lead by example.
