Union Health Minister JP Nadda highlighted the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to prevent and even reverse fatty liver disease. Speaking at the ‘Liver Health Pledge Ceremony’ in New Delhi, Nadda emphasized that fatty liver is not only preventable but can also be reversed with better food choices and lifestyle adjustments.
He explained that the liver plays a vital role in digestion, detoxification, and energy storage, underscoring that if the liver isn’t healthy, it affects the entire body. Fatty liver, a condition where excess fat accumulates in the liver, increases the risk of severe health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even cancer.
In his address, Nadda pointed out that simple lifestyle changes, such as cutting down on oil usage in cooking, can significantly improve liver health. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently urged everyone to reduce oil usage in cooking by 10 percent. This small step can go a long way in preventing non-communicable diseases and improving liver health,” he noted.
The theme for this year’s World Liver Day was “Food is Medicine,” emphasizing the strong link between nutrition and liver health. The Health Ministry, in partnership with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), organized a special liver health camp for ministry officials, further promoting awareness on the importance of liver care.
During the event, FSSAI showcased liver-friendly foods such as millets, which are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, and can aid in bile production, reduce inflammation, and improve digestion. Other foods highlighted included cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, leafy greens, fatty fish, nuts, citrus fruits, and healthy fats like olive oil—all known to support liver health and detoxification.
By making informed dietary choices and taking proactive measures, people can protect their liver from diseases like Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and maintain better overall health.
