The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is set to host a Healthy Aging Wellness Day on June 21 at the Sauble Beach Community Centre, offering a day of wellness-focused activities, expert talks, and community engagement opportunities.
Running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event will include a range of informative sessions and interactive workshops aimed at promoting healthy aging. Among the key topics covered will be dementia and Alzheimer’s awareness, fitness, nutrition, and wellness. There will also be yoga and fitness demonstrations to engage attendees in active living.
The event will provide valuable information on community involvement, volunteering, hospice care, and respite care options. It will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions with healthcare professionals, and hands-on workshops to help attendees incorporate healthy habits into their daily routines.
Staff from the town presented the initiative to council during the March 18 meeting, emphasizing the growing need for awareness and support surrounding dementia and Alzheimer’s. This event is the result of collaboration with local health partners, including the Sauble Beach Family Health Team and Bruce Peninsula Hospice.
Local service clubs, such as the Sauble Beach Lion’s Club, will be invited to set up booths to promote their volunteer opportunities and community activities. Other organizations, including the Grey Bruce Health Unit, Victorian Order of Nurses, and Meals on Wheels, will also be involved, offering additional resources and support for attendees.
The event aims to strengthen community ties and reduce social isolation by connecting attendees with essential resources. Organizers believe the day will foster collaboration among residents and local organizations, empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to live healthier, more fulfilled lives.
The town has applied for two grants to fund the event and is optimistic that at least one application will be successful. Staff are also exploring sponsorships to support the initiative. The estimated cost of hosting the event is between $2,200 and $2,800, which includes venue rental, setup, teardown, and food for attendees.
Council members expressed their support for the event, which is seen as an important opportunity to address vital health concerns and improve overall well-being in the community.
