In the midst of political turbulence at the federal level, it is more important than ever to make our voices heard and convey what truly matters to us. Regardless of one’s stance on government reform, we can all agree on a few key priorities: supporting our local farmers and ranchers, ensuring access to healthy food for everyone in our communities, and advocating for vital programs like Farm to School that strengthen local food systems.
As someone who has dedicated 38 years of work in Western Colorado with Healthy Community Food Systems and numerous nonprofits, I have seen firsthand how difficult it can be to make meaningful progress in these areas. The importance of stable funding, adequate staffing, and strong agency support cannot be overstated. Any reduction in these critical resources poses a significant risk to the well-being of our communities.
Through my work with programs such as the National Farm to School initiative, the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program, Cooperative Extension, NRCS, USDA Rural Development, and other organizations, I have come to deeply understand the value these agencies bring to local communities. The support and funding they provide are invaluable in fostering a sustainable and healthy food system.
I urge you to show your support for continued funding for these essential agencies, to protect the federal workers who serve our communities, and to ensure the continuation of vital federal grant programs that many local nonprofits rely on. Your advocacy is crucial in safeguarding the future of healthy food, local agriculture, and the well-being of our children.
