Recent research suggests that drinking more water could offer a variety of health benefits, from preventing kidney stones to supporting weight loss, according to an analysis published in JAMA Network Open on November 25, 2024. The study reviewed 18 randomized clinical trials, the gold standard in research, to explore the health effects of altering daily water intake over periods ranging from four days to five years.

The results indicate that increasing water consumption can have substantial positive effects, especially for kidney health and weight management. Specifically, drinking eight cups of water a day was linked to a significantly reduced risk of developing kidney stones, while six cups a day appeared to support weight loss. Additionally, drinking more water showed potential benefits for preventing migraines, urinary tract infections, and even managing diabetes and low blood pressure.

While fluid intake from foods and other beverages wasn’t considered in this study, the findings underscore the importance of staying properly hydrated. Experts emphasize that drinking six to eight cups of water daily is an easy and effective way to improve overall health and reduce the risk of several common conditions. This research provides further evidence that maintaining adequate hydration is an essential aspect of a healthy lifestyle.
