As Dry January comes to an end, Guernsey’s Health Improvement Commission is urging islanders to maintain healthier drinking habits year-round. The initiative encourages people to adopt moderate drinking practices to minimize potential health risks.
Andrea Nightingale, the Commission’s substance use lead, emphasized that limiting alcohol consumption to no more than 14 units per week can significantly reduce health risks. She also advised that these 14 units should be spread across at least three days to allow the body adequate recovery time. “The body needs a break from alcohol, as it dehydrates, so taking a break helps the body replenish itself,” Nightingale explained.
Nightingale also noted a positive shift in drinking habits, particularly among younger generations, who are increasingly opting for alcohol-free lifestyles. “Young people are really leading the way in becoming more health-conscious, which is encouraging,” she said, adding that the Commission hopes this trend continues and influences older generations as well.
