According to the study, regular coffee consumption is linked to an additional 1.8 years of life expectancy.

The research challenges the common view that coffee’s role in healthy aging is often overlooked in traditional medical advice. Lead author Rodrigo Cunha from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, emphasized that with the world’s population aging rapidly, it’s crucial to explore dietary habits that could support both longevity and healthy aging.

While superfoods like berries and legumes are often touted for their health benefits, this study points out that coffee contains over 2,000 bioactive compounds. These include substances that reduce neuroinflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects—factors that help mitigate oxidative stress or internal body wear and tear.

Cunha noted, “Our review highlights how regular, moderate coffee consumption can counteract the biological mechanisms that naturally slow down or fail as we age, potentially reducing health issues and related diseases.”

The study also challenges current clinical guidelines, which often advise against coffee consumption for those over the age of 60 due to its caffeine content. Researchers argue that these recommendations should be revisited in light of the growing body of evidence showing that moderate coffee intake can help reduce the effects of chronic diseases and extend life expectancy.
