Morning Coffee Linked to Lower Risk of Mortality, Study Finds

A new study published in the European Heart Journal has revealed that the timing of coffee consumption plays a crucial role in its health benefits, with morning coffee drinkers showing a significantly lower risk of death from all causes, including cardiovascular disease.

Conducted by researchers at Tulane University, the study examined the health outcomes of 40,725 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and 1,463 participants from the Women’s and Men’s Lifestyle Validation Study. The data analyzed over a nine-year period revealed that morning coffee drinkers had notably better health outcomes than those who drank coffee throughout the day or not at all.

The study categorized participants into three groups: morning coffee drinkers (36% of participants), all-day coffee drinkers (14%), and non-coffee drinkers (48%). After adjusting for factors such as sleep patterns, coffee intake, and other variables, researchers found that morning coffee drinkers had a significantly lower risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease-related deaths compared to non-coffee drinkers. Interestingly, even heavy coffee consumption in the morning—up to three cups per day—was associated with reduced mortality risk.

In contrast, those who consumed coffee throughout the day did not exhibit the same health benefits, with no significant link between all-day coffee consumption and lower mortality rates.
