86-Year-Old Defies Aging with Pilates

by Kaia

As New Year’s resolutions take shape, many are making fitness a priority. In Pismo Beach, Richard Melsheimer is demonstrating that age is no barrier to maintaining health and vitality. At 86 years old, he has made fitness a lifelong commitment, proving that it’s never too late to prioritize physical well-being.

Melsheimer’s journey into fitness began four years ago when his son recommended Pilates to help manage his scoliosis. Since then, Pilates has become an essential part of his routine, significantly improving his strength, posture, and overall mobility. The 86-year-old credits his consistent workouts with helping him tackle daily activities with greater ease and confidence.

“Most of my friends are using walkers or canes, or they’ve passed away, so I’m doing everything I can to fight aging,” Melsheimer said.

Before starting Pilates, Melsheimer’s posture had been severely affected by scoliosis, causing his back to take on an ‘S’ shape. According to doctors, prolonged periods of inactivity or desk work can exacerbate muscle loss and lead to a higher risk of injury as we age.

Dr. Thomas Vendegna, a physician with Dignity Health, explains that as people age and reduce physical activity, the risk of fractures increases due to muscle density loss. This leads to a cycle of weakness and further inactivity. “It’s crucial to reverse or at least slow this process by staying active,” he noted.

Melsheimer found that Pilates not only addressed his back issues but also strengthened his muscles and joints, helping him remain independent. His Pilates instructor, Misha Bechtolsheim, emphasizes the importance of challenging oneself, especially when it comes to overcoming limitations.

“Many people feel restricted by past injuries or experiences. They often hear, ‘You’re doing well for your age,’ but Pilates helps them break through these self-imposed boundaries,” Bechtolsheim said. “As people expand their comfort zones, their mood and overall well-being improve as well.”

Bechtolsheim’s approach focuses on simple yet effective movements that engage key muscles, such as the inner quad, which stabilizes the knee joint. Strengthening this muscle is especially beneficial for activities like pickleball or skiing. Melsheimer’s improved strength and stability are evident in his daily life, including his ability to climb stairs with ease and even walk up bleachers at sporting events—tasks that once seemed daunting.

Melsheimer’s dedication to fitness allows him to continue working, traveling with his wife, and enjoying active outings. His advice to anyone hesitant to begin a fitness journey is clear: “Don’t expect immediate results. Do it because you want to, not because you have to. That mindset will keep you going for life.”

As Melsheimer’s story demonstrates, it is never too late to prioritize physical health, and the benefits of staying active extend far beyond the gym.
