Local Man Shares Health Care Story, Urges Support for Hospital Fundraising Campaign

by Kaia

A North Bay man is sharing his personal health journey in an effort to raise crucial funds for local medical equipment. Jeff Miller, who has overcome multiple health challenges, is now encouraging the community to support the North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) Foundation’s fundraising drive.

Miller, a local resident, has faced serious health setbacks throughout his life. In his mid-twenties, he suffered two heart attacks, but managed to recover and regain his health. He went on to marry his fiancée and start a family, but his health challenges didn’t end there.

While working one day, Miller experienced a sudden and alarming symptom. “In the middle of responding to emails, I suddenly couldn’t type or form sentences. I had no idea at the time, but I was having a stroke,” he said.

Rushed to the NBRHC Emergency Department, Miller underwent a CT scan that confirmed the stroke. Thanks to the timely intervention and advanced technology available at NBRHC, he was able to receive life-saving treatment that greatly improved his recovery prospects.

“The swift care I received at NBRHC gave me a fighting chance,” Miller explained. “The technology and expertise here played a huge role in my recovery, and I’m incredibly grateful.”

Miller has since fully recovered and returned to his active lifestyle, enjoying family life and pursuing endurance sports. However, ongoing health monitoring and regular tests are now part of his routine.

“I’m hopeful that I can continue to receive these tests locally,” he said. “But that depends on the success of fundraising efforts to upgrade our medical equipment at NBRHC.”

As part of the current fundraising campaign, the NBRHC’s Nuclear Medicine Department is working to raise funds for two state-of-the-art SPECT/CT machines. These machines are essential for diagnosing heart disease, cancers, infections, and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The total cost for the machines and necessary renovations is $4.3 million.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Shapiro family, all contributions to the Nuclear Medicine upgrade will be matched at a 2:1 ratio until December 31. This means every donation made will have triple the impact.

“I urge the community to consider giving this holiday season,” Miller said. “Your donation will have a direct impact on the health and well-being of everyone in our community.”

The NBRHC Foundation is calling on residents to support the campaign to enhance local medical care, ensuring that advanced diagnostic tools are available to meet the growing needs of the community.

Donations can be made directly to the NBRHC Foundation, with matching contributions available until December 31.
