Mena Suvari has revealed she was forced to give up her vegan diet after experiencing serious health issues.
During a recent appearance on the Dinner’s on Me podcast, host Jesse Tyler Ferguson asked Suvari whether she still followed a vegan lifestyle while they were at a café. In response, the actress shared that she no longer adheres strictly to a plant-based diet.
“No, it’s a long conversation,” Suvari explained. “For me, specifically, I got very sick. I had a lot of physical issues that I needed to address.”
Suvari recalled being initially hesitant about changing her diet, but a health expert ultimately advised her to make adjustments. “I had a health practitioner say to me, ‘It’s not about whether you’re vegan; it’s about your blood work. I work with many vegans, and they don’t have your bloodwork,'” the 45-year-old actress said. “I think it’s important for people to consider their own bodies and what works for them. Not everything is one-size-fits-all.”
Ferguson expressed relief that Suvari is now prioritizing her health.
While Suvari did not go into detail about her specific health concerns, she emphasized the importance of being open to change. “It was very hard for me. For five years, I lived a very vegan lifestyle, and I had to address what that meant for me,” she explained. “A lot of my experience with the movement didn’t feel open to broader conversations. I think it’s important to have a well-rounded discussion, instead of trying to convince others to follow the same path.”
Suvari is currently working on the sci-fi heist film The Dresden Sun, which is in post-production.
