Miranda Hart has expressed her joy at getting married for the first time at the age of 51. The comedian and actress revealed that she tied the knot with a man she met during the pandemic, calling the experience a “full injection of joy and fun.”
“It’s the best!” Hart exclaimed. “He’s my best friend, and we have the best fun. The fact that I could meet somebody—it’s not a rom-com story, but it gives hope. No matter your situation, there’s always hope for change.”
Hart shares more about her relationship in her new book, where she also discusses her battle with chronic fatigue due to Lyme disease. Best known for her BBC sitcom Miranda, Hart acknowledged that the past few years have been challenging but said she is “thrilled” about her marriage and eager to return to her comedic roots.
“It’s so nice to be back in television; I feel very excited to be here,” Hart told The One Show. She added, “After being bedbound and housebound with a fatigue-based chronic illness, you miss life a lot. I’m thrilled to be sitting here.”
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted through tick bites. While it can be treated effectively if diagnosed early, Hart struggled for years to understand the cause of her illness.
Reflecting on her confinement during her illness, Hart shared her feelings on BBC Radio 4’s Today program. “Unless you’ve experienced fatigue like that, you don’t understand what it’s like to be unable to get off the floor,” she said. “There were times I would look at a glass of water and think, I don’t know how to pick that up.”
Hart emphasized the importance of being heard and accepted, especially in medical situations. “When you’re not, it’s the worst,” she added. She now feels she has a clearer understanding of herself, which she describes as “incredible.”
After finally receiving her diagnosis, Hart discovered that her symptoms dated back to her teenage years. “I probably contracted a tick-borne illness when I was about 14 or 15, and that’s when my symptoms began,” she recalled. “Being misunderstood and misjudged is one of the hardest aspects of these conditions.”
In her book, Hart aims to share insights that aided her recovery. “I wanted to explore wellness and dialogue about health, but I was alone at home. The doctors didn’t know how to help me, and I couldn’t do yoga retreats or cold plunges,” she explained. “I researched what the universal truths are for wellness, and I developed ten keys to living well, which I call my treasures.”
Despite her struggles, Hart feels she is now living a life filled with joy and meaning.
Hart, who began her career performing at the Edinburgh Fringe in the early 2000s, is best known for her role as the socially awkward Miranda in her self-titled sitcom, which aired from 2009 to 2015. Now, with her new husband by her side, she is ready to take on new projects. “I’m really keen to get back to some silliness; I miss the studio floor and laughter,” she said.
After her appearance on The One Show, Hart expressed her gratitude for the support from her fans regarding her marriage. In a video posted on social media platform X, she shared, “I’ve got my best friend to do life with, and it’s wonderful. I’m also thrilled to be back in telly land with a book out. Thank you all for your support.”
In a playful moment, Hart ended the video by high-fiving her husband, whose identity she has not revealed. She teased that she would share more about how they met when her book is published, hinting at a “little twist.”
