Dr. Ralph de la Torre, the CEO of Steward Health Care in Dallas, is departing from the company following a controversy that saw him held in contempt of Congress for not testifying about its bankruptcy.
A spokesperson for Steward confirmed his departure in a statement to NewsCenter 5.
“Dr. de la Torre has amicably separated from Steward on mutually agreeable terms. He will continue to advocate for better reimbursement rates for underprivileged patients. Dr. de la Torre emphasizes the importance of this mission. He believes Steward’s financial struggles highlight Massachusetts’s ongoing issues with healthcare structure and the inequities in its state system,” the statement said.
Before founding Steward with support from Cerberus Capital Management, de la Torre served as the CEO of Caritas Christi Health Care in Boston. He was also a cardiac surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
