The World Health Organization (WHO) and TikTok have launched a year-long partnership aimed at providing accurate, science-based health information to global audiences. This collaboration reflects WHO’s commitment to using digital platforms to enhance public health literacy and encourage healthy behaviors in today’s digital landscape.
Social media has become a major source of information for many, influencing decisions and behaviors related to health. Research shows that one in four young adults seeks news on social media platforms like TikTok. However, the spread of misinformation on these platforms poses a significant challenge. The new WHO-TikTok collaboration seeks to counteract this issue by promoting reliable, evidence-based health content and fostering positive health conversations.
“This partnership represents a turning point in how platforms can act more responsibly,” said Dr. Jeremy Farrar, WHO’s Chief Scientist. “Health and technology intersect in ways that allow us to reach people where they are, providing them with credible information to promote a healthier future.”
Boosting Health Literacy through TikTok’s Global Reach
With over one billion users, TikTok aims to use its platform to increase access to trustworthy health information. By tackling stigmas, sharing personal stories, and providing resources, the platform is striving to improve the well-being of its users.
“We know millions come to TikTok to connect, including for their health,” said Valiant Richey, TikTok’s Global Head of Trust and Safety Outreach and Partnerships. “Partnering with WHO’s Fides network of health influencers will allow us to provide engaging, reliable mental well-being content to our community.”
WHO’s Fides network, launched in 2020, is a group of over 800 health content creators reaching 150 million people. Their mission is to combat misinformation by promoting credible, science-backed content. This collaboration with TikTok will strengthen their efforts to ensure that the platform remains a source of reliable health information.
Empowering Creators to Share Science-Based Content
Dr. Alain Labrique, WHO’s Director of Digital Health and Innovation, highlighted the vital role creators play in connecting science with everyday life. “Creators understand their audience and can bridge the gap between science and daily experiences. WHO supports these influencers to deliver evidence-based health messages that resonate with their audiences.”
The partnership will focus on creating engaging, easy-to-understand video content on various health topics. TikTok will also offer additional support to influencers through creator training programs, helping them to better communicate science-based health information.
The collaboration between WHO and TikTok is a significant step in the fight against health misinformation, empowering users to access and share credible information for better health outcomes globally.
