Following a deadly shooting on Sunday night, the University of Arizona Police Department has apprehended the suspect, while campus resources are intensifying efforts to support students.
Counseling and Psych Services (CAPS) is working to reach students affected by the tragedy, particularly those living in nearby dormitories. “We’ve definitely had a lot of students in the dorms, especially those close to where the shooting occurred,” said the director of CAPS.
The shooting claimed the life of Pima Community College student Minhaj Jamshidi, prompting increased counseling services across campus. “It was a really terrible event, and whether or not you were directly impacted, it’s a tragedy that has affected our campus community,” stated Amanda Kraus, interim Vice President of Student Affairs.
Staff from housing and residential life, many of whom reside on campus, also experienced the incident firsthand. “They were right there around the time of the shooting,” Kraus noted.
As incidents of gun violence become more common, university officials are adapting their strategies. “Never would I have imagined that this would be part of my job,” said CAPS staff member Barnes. “Unfortunately, this reality is becoming a part of our expertise.”
