Caffeine and sleep may seem like opposites, but combining them could offer unexpected benefits. The “napuccino” — a method where you drink a caffeinated beverage before taking a short nap — is gaining popularity as a way to wake up with more energy and alertness.
In a recent episode of The Diary of a CEO podcast, sleep expert Dr. Cheri Mah from Redwood City, California, discussed the napuccino as a useful tool for improving both alertness and performance. According to Mah, the process is simple: drink a caffeinated beverage, then take a 20- to 30-minute power nap. The caffeine typically takes about 15 minutes to start working.
“If you can fall asleep within five to 10 minutes, the caffeine will kick in just as you wake up, giving you a boost after your 20 to 30-minute nap,” she explained.
Research Supports the Effectiveness of Napuccinos
Mah pointed out that studies show this combination of caffeine and a nap is more effective for improving alertness and performance than either caffeine or napping alone. This energy boost can last for several hours, making it a practical solution for those needing to stay sharp.
Fox News Digital reached out to Dr. Mah for further insights, while other experts also weighed in.
Dr. Kelly Baron, a clinical psychologist and director of the behavioral sleep medicine lab at the University of Utah, described the napuccino as a scientifically proven method. “Having some caffeine, followed by a short nap, is better than either one alone,” she said. “By the time you wake up from the nap, the caffeine will start to take effect.”
Baron highlighted that this technique has been tested in activities like driving and shift work, where maintaining alertness is crucial. “Short naps, with or without caffeine, are proven methods for boosting performance when people are feeling sleepy,” she added.
Considerations for a Healthy Napuccino
Though a full seven to nine hours of sleep per night is ideal, many people struggle to achieve that. For those looking for a temporary energy boost, the napuccino may be a helpful solution.
However, Los Angeles-based dietitian Ilana Muhlstein emphasized that it’s important to be mindful of how the coffee is prepared. Adding sugar or high-calorie creamers could undermine the potential health benefits of the napuccino. “Consuming too much sugar can lead to energy spikes and crashes, which may counteract the effects of the caffeine and nap,” she warned.
Muhlstein recommended drinking black coffee or using minimal additives like regular or plant-based milk, and opting for low-calorie sweeteners such as Stevia or monk fruit. “This way, you can enjoy the benefits of the napuccino without unnecessary sugar or calories,” she said.
Caffeine Guidelines and Caution
The Mayo Clinic advises that up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is generally safe for most adults. However, heavy caffeine consumption can cause side effects, and individuals concerned about their caffeine intake should consult with a healthcare provider.
The napuccino offers a simple, effective way to boost alertness, but as with any health strategy, moderation and thoughtful preparation are key.
