Dental experts are warning against the use of DIY decorative braces, commonly known as “fashion braces,” which can cause serious oral health issues. These non-medical braces, often applied at home, can lead to painful tooth damage, misalignment, and infections.
Dr. Samuel Lee, an orthodontist from Southern California, emphasized to “Today” that once tooth enamel is damaged, it cannot be repaired. “Once it’s broken and once it’s fractured, it’s completely done,” he said.
“Fashion braces” are not a recent phenomenon. A 2018 medical journal highlighted their rise in Southeast Asia, where teenagers sought them for their perceived luxury. Thailand even banned these fake braces after infections from them led to fatalities.
Despite these concerns, the trend continues globally, fueled by TikTok tutorials showing how to apply these braces. Dr. Paul DiFranco, writing in July, warned that these braces might contain harmful chemicals like cadmium or lead. The adhesive used is often not medical-grade, increasing risks of injury and choking.
In May, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) also cautioned about the serious health risks associated with fashion braces, including metal exposure leading to infections.
