As Bryan and College Station ISD schools prepare for the new academic year, student-athletes have already begun practicing in the sweltering August heat.

To prevent heat-related illnesses, staying hydrated and having access to air conditioning are crucial. However, these measures are not always enough during intense outdoor activities.

“The heat is overwhelming right now,” said Kassidi Flater, the Nursing Coordinator for College Station ISD.

Student-athletes are currently training under the intense sun. Flater emphasized that many young athletes do not fully understand the need for proper hydration. “At their age, they aren’t accustomed to drinking enough water, and they often don’t realize they need to hydrate well before going outside,” she explained.

To manage heat stress, Bryan ISD uses a bulb globe thermometer to assess conditions in direct sunlight. “We have weather stations at both high schools that monitor on-site conditions. These stations send alerts to coaches and athletic trainers, providing updates on current conditions and necessary adjustments,” said Josh Woodall, an Athletic Trainer at Bryan ISD.

Different sports require various adjustments to ensure student safety in the heat. Parents are advised to send their children to school with refillable water bottles to help prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of needing medical attention.
