Medical professionals are urging individuals observing fasting during Ramazan to make mindful food choices to ensure they maintain good health throughout the holy month.
Doctors, including Nishtar University’s Dean of Medicine Dr. Azam Khan, Pakistan Medical Association President Dr. Masoodur Rauf Haraj, and renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Tanveer Malik, have emphasized the importance of a balanced diet, particularly for meals at Sehar (pre-dawn) and Iftar (breaking of fast).
Dr. Azam Khan explained that fasting alters typical eating patterns, making food choices crucial to sustaining energy levels. He noted that many individuals unknowingly consume excessive fried and spicy foods, such as pakoras and samosas, during Iftar, which can lead to digestive discomfort and energy crashes. Instead, he recommends opting for lighter, more easily digestible meals to avoid health complications.
Furthermore, Dr. Khan advised diabetics to refrain from sugary and artificially colored drinks, emphasizing that staying hydrated is essential. He recommended consuming two to three liters of water between Iftar and Sehar to prevent dehydration.
Dr. Masood Haraj underscored the importance of Sehar in preparing the body for the fast, stressing that a nutritious pre-dawn meal can help maintain energy levels throughout the day.
Doctors are collectively urging people to be cautious about their dietary habits during Ramazan, as mindful eating and proper hydration can significantly improve overall well-being during the fasting period.
