Flu activity continues to be high in California, leading to crowded emergency rooms and increasing numbers of children falling ill. In Clovis, Central California, local health experts are on alert, particularly for younger patients.
Dr. Garine Lepejian, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente Fresno, expressed concern over the impact of the flu on young children, especially those under the age of two, who tend to experience more severe symptoms.
In response to rising flu cases, the Clovis Unified School District has been actively monitoring and addressing the situation. Marie Thuringer, Director of Nursing at the district, noted that many of the flu cases were reported after the winter break, with parents confirming cases of both influenza A and B.
“The students are dealing with flu-like symptoms, such as upper respiratory issues, headaches, and fevers,” said Thuringer. “A lot of students are being sent home because of these symptoms.”
The district has implemented several precautions to reduce the spread of the flu, including the use of HEPA filters in health offices and classrooms. These filters are regularly maintained to ensure optimal function.
Additionally, students with fevers over 100°F are sent home to prevent further transmission of the virus. The district also coordinates with the Fresno County Department of Public Health and local hospitals to keep the community informed and safe.
Valley doctors and school officials stress the importance of flu vaccinations, advising that it’s not too late for students to get their flu shots. They also recommend that students who are feeling sick stay home to prevent spreading illness.
