Study Finds Many Plant-Based Restaurant Meals Are Unhealthy

by Kaia

A recent study published in Nutrients highlights concerns about the healthfulness of plant-based dishes served at restaurants worldwide. Despite the growing popularity of plant-based diets, particularly among consumers driven by health, environmental, and ethical motivations, the study reveals that many plant-based meals may not be as healthy as they appear.

The study analyzed the menus of 561 restaurants across 37 countries, including both omnivore (OMNI) and vegan or vegetarian (VEG) eateries, to assess whether their plant-based offerings avoided common unhealthy components like refined grains, deep-fried foods, and saturated fats. The findings showed that a significant portion of plant-based dishes at both OMNI and VEG restaurants contained unhealthy ingredients, with refined grains being the most common concern.

Key findings include:

Refined Grains: About 40% of OMNI and 38% of VEG meals contained refined grains, such as white rice, white flour, and refined pasta, which are linked to chronic health issues like heart disease and diabetes.

Health Scores: Only 2% of the restaurants earned a perfect health score, meaning that most plant-based menus included at least one unhealthy component.

Nutritional Transparency: Only 33 restaurants (10% of OMNI and 2% of VEG) provided full nutritional information, such as calories, sodium, sugar, and saturated fat content.

Global Trends: U.S.-based restaurants had slightly more healthful options, but the issue of unhealthy plant-based meals is a global concern, with little difference between U.S. and non-U.S. eateries.

The study suggests that while plant-based foods are often perceived as healthy, many restaurant meals feature fried foods, excessive amounts of saturated fats, and refined grains, all of which can contribute to cardiovascular disease and other health problems. The researchers emphasize the need for greater transparency in menu labeling and urge regulatory bodies like the FDA to extend nutritional disclosure requirements beyond large franchises.

In conclusion, while vegan and vegetarian diets have clear health benefits when properly planned, the plant-based meals served in many restaurants may not meet the standards of a healthful diet, particularly due to the use of refined grains, fried ingredients, and saturated fats.
