Study Finds Long-Lived Men Healthier Than Female Counterparts

by Kaia

A recent study by Chinese researchers suggests that long-lived men exhibit better health than their female counterparts, thanks to unique DNA methylation characteristics that help regulate genes associated with age-related diseases.

DNA methylation, an epigenetic process that modifies gene expression without altering the genetic code, plays a crucial role in aging and disease prevention, according to Xiao Fuhui, an associate researcher at the Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Key Findings of the Study

Researchers conducted whole-genome bisulfite sequencing on four groups: long-lived men, long-lived women, younger men, and younger women. Their analysis revealed that male centenarians possess specific DNA methylation units that regulate genes linked to age-related diseases, including tumors. This protective mechanism results in lower disease incidence and better overall physical health compared to long-lived women.
